Centrifugal Casting

Centrifugally cast tubes are produced in accordance with the general requirements of ASTM 560. Selected alloys from DIN EN 10295 and a number of unassigned/proprietary alloys are also produced.

Tubes are produced at Steloy by the horizontal centrifugal casting process. The centrifugal force created by spinning the mold allows the molten metal to form on the inside of the mold, thus creating a cast tube. Because of the significant forces generated during casting the less dense materials, gas and impurities, move toward the inner diameter of the tube. Inherently, the inner diameter contains porosity and impurities and must be removed using a pull boring machining. Once this non-sound layer is removed, what remains is a sound, fine-grained metallic structure.
